DRAGON CON ART SHOW HIGHLIGHTS THE WORK OF GENRE ARTISTS

ATLANTA – August 24, 2013 – With a record number of artists submitting entries – more than 250 artists – the Art Show at Dragon Con 2013, Atlanta’s internationally known pop culture, fantasy and sci-fi convention, is the largest and most diverse juried art event in fandom.11x14 thoughts

The show will be judged by a panel of professional artists led by Jim Burns, who is this year’s Dragon Con Guest of Honor. He is being recognized for his lifelong commitment to helping emerging artists who are choosing the sci-fi and fantasy genre as their subject matter. He can often be found giving these young people lectures, demonstrations or reviews of their portfolios to pass on his thirty plus years’ of experience.

Other jurors are Carrie Ann Baade and Omar Rayyan, each recognized in their discipline and connected by a shared love of promoting new artists. While the professional jury determines many of the onsite awards, Dragon Con members are eligible to vote in the Fan Favorite’s portion of the art awards.

Throughout the show, fans have opportunity to meet their favorite artists on show floor or hear them discuss their work in programmed panels and workshops. This year’s panels include discussions and demonstrations of artistic techniques, strengthening creativity and business aspects of being a professional artists.

The Art Show and Print Shop has been a part of Dragon Con for decades and has brought artists such as Larry Elmore (known for his fantasy book-cover paintings), Julie Bell and Boris Vallejo (award-winning fantasy painters), and Laura Reynolds (award-winning multimedia dolls) together with fans of all ages.

Ranging from found-object art, costume pieces, paintings, collage, sketches, hand and digital drawings, figurines, and statues, the Art Show and Print Shop has something for the whole family and every budget. Usually themed in classic science fiction and fantasy topes, in recent years many new artists have found their niche in the increasingly popular Steampunk movement with its appeal of an alternate history where Victorian sensibilities combine with science fiction run amok.

The 2013 Dragon Con Art Show and Print Shop is located again this year in the Atlanta Hyatt Regency Hotel (265 Peachtree St. NE) on the Exhibition Level, and right next to Comic and Pop Artists Alley.
