Apply Today!

Dragon Con Media Relations provides media access reporters and photojournalists on assignment for editorial content. We also provide fan-based media Media Access if the outlet provides wide distribution and relates to our target audience. Often fan-based media will need to be recommended by a Dragon Con director for currency and reputation in specific fandom.

Dragon Con Media Relations opened Media Access Online Registration for Dragon Con 2014 on 3/15/2014.  Apply by following this link:

https://www.dragoncon.org/mediarelations/dc_media_rel_app.php

Your application will be vetted for appropriateness and after the convention your coverage will be audited. As much as possible, we will be sharing your coverage on the Dragon Con Main Page and the Dragon Con Media Relations Page.

If you were approved for 2013:

You will need to provide proof of coverage. If proof is still needed, we will reach out to you because we are continuing the audit. We understand that some outlets sent in coverage that needs to make it to our database and we are reviewing those outlets now. If you need to contact us, please consider putting your OUTLET name in the subject so that we can better address your needs.

We will also be auditing your work for 2014. We want you to be prepared for the audit by knowing what we expect from reporters who are given Media Access. Our criteria for the audit is not complicated:

  • “Did the outlet report?”
    • No coverage, no return
  • “Is the reporting professional quality, even if the outlet is fan-based?”
    • We will look for a correlation between number of badges for an outlet and the impact of reporting/number of pieces produced
    • If you have a 26 slide photo wrap up and were provided 4 badges, that would not be considered adequate coverage for 2013
    • If you have not updated your news site since January, that would not be considered quality
    • If you announce that you were at Dragon Con drinking rather than reporting, that would constitute an issue
    • If your article is poorly written, that is not quality
  • “Did anyone see, hear, or read the coverage?”
    • We will be more rigorous in using 3rd party websites to determine your site’s distribution
  • “Is this coverage respectful to Dragon Con Members, Guests, Volunteers, etc?”
    • If your reporting ridicules and insults our members or our volunteers, you will not be provided with media access
  • “Is this coverage a reasonable representation of the Dragon Con we know?”
    • Media access does not exist to underwrite comedians, satire, or parody that insults the message of the fun of Dragon Con
    • We avoid judging content unless the content is patently adversarial to Dragon Con members, guests, staff, or leadership.
    • Dragon Con Media Access will not be provided for organizations that ridicule or abuse our attendees

If you have applied in the past and were not approved for access:

  • If your outlet will be able to demonstrate more increased quality or distribution, please follow these instructions for consideration for 2014:
  • Please send an email to mediarelations@dragoncon.org with the subject RECONSIDERATION: (Your outlet name)
  • Explain how you have covered Dragon Con and produced coverage.
  • Explain how your outlet has grown using specific impressions, hits, or distribution growth
  • If you can be endorsed by a Dragon Con director for unique fit for a Dragon Con Programming Track, please include that reference as well
