In 2014, Dragon Con is changing how we manage interviews with guests.  The biggest change is that reporters who attempt to interview guests (celebrities and writers) without using our interview process will have their media credentials and their badges revoked immediately. Security will walk them from Dragon Con. This rule only applies to Dragon Con

In recent years the number of reporters covering Dragon Con has increased exponentially, and so has the number of reporters requesting interviews.  Working with agents, last year we had to limit interview requests to reporters with a significant distribution. We had a number of reporters go around our process and had significant complaints from agents, the Walk of Fame, and guests including both writers and media guests.

After reporters are approved for media access to Dragon Con 2014, some reporters will receive an invitation to request interviews.  The interview forms will be available shortly for you to request interviews.  If you have been approved as media, and do not have an invitation, you can expect that you will not be authorized to request interviews.

For those media members who have received your invitation to request interviews, interview request do not represent approval.  Please remember when making your request that each guest has limited time, and that if you are requesting to talk to a Star Trek Captain, you are in competition with major international media outlets and significant outlets in that fandom.  Think wisely before requesting the top guests at Dragon Con.

ATLANTA – March 3, 2014 – Dragon Con, Atlanta’s internationally known pop culture, fantasy and sci-fi convention, has selected the Atlanta Community Food Bank as its official charity for 2014.  Dragon Con will match dollar for dollar, up to $50,000, any money raised for this charity at the 2014 convention.

In addition, Dragon Con announced its Superheroes community service program for Dragon Con members and fans in the Atlanta area.

“The money that Dragon Con fans and members donate each year is very important to the charities we support, but these organizations also need volunteers to help them carry out their missions,” said Rachel Reeves, convention co-chair.  “The Superheroes program lets our fans come together as friends while making a difference in the community.”

Three Superhero projects are currently planned for the spring and summer of 2014, while a fourth one is targeted shortly before the Dragon Con convention to give out-of-town members an opportunity to participate. In addition to having a great time, people who participate in any of these service projects will be invited to an exclusive celebration during this year’s convention and will receive a Superheroes t-shirt.

The first event, organized in partnership with the Georgia Conservancy, involves trail building and maintenance at Sweetwater Creek State Park on March 8.  Located 15 minutes from downtown Atlanta, Sweetwater Creek State Park is a peaceful area of trails through fields, forests and along Sweetwater Creek to the ruins of an antebellum textile mill.

Next, Dragon Con Superheroes project teams will participate in the Walk to End Lupus Now on April 26.  Each year, the event attracts more than over 8,000 participants for a 1-mile walk through Piedmont Park, followed by live entertainment and food sales.

The third event, to benefit the Atlanta Community Food Bank (ACFB), is set for May 24.  This is a terrific opportunity for Dragon Con’s members and fans to get to know this great organization before the convention.

Project teams at this event will help sort and pack food items so they can be distributed to families in need.  One out of every five Georgians is food insecure, meaning they don’t know where their next meal comes from.  Thanks to donors and volunteers, ACFB distributed 45 million pounds of food and grocery to residents in its Atlanta and northeast Georgia service area.

Last year, through its charity auction and other fundraising activities, Dragon Con raised more than $87,000 for three official charities, which was more money than any previous year.  Since 2005, Dragon Con has raised almost $311,000 for its official charities.

ATLANTA – September 18, 2013 – Dragon Con, Atlanta’s internationally known pop culture, fantasy, and sci-fi convention, announced a record attendance of more than 57,000 for this year’s convention in downtown Atlanta.  In addition to attendance, the convention set new records in its charity fundraising and blood drive efforts.

“We had a great year,” said Pat Henry, President of Dragon Con, Inc. “We had amazing actors and other celebrities join us.  We had a terrific program of panels, discussions, concerts and shows.  And, as always, the cosplay was out of this world.”

During the closing ceremonies, Dragon Con announced a change in convention leadership for 2014.  Rachel Reeves, Senior Director of Guests and Media, will join David Cody as convention co-chair.  Convention chairs are responsible for running the day-to-day operations of the convention.

Dragon Con’s annual Robert A. Heinlein “Pay It Forward” blood drive attracted a record turnout, with 2,972 attendees donating more than 6,000 units of blood and blood products this year.  The annual drive – consistently ranked as the largest convention-based blood drive – benefits LifeSouth, which serves more than 40 hospitals in the Atlanta area and 110 hospitals in the Southeast. download

DRAGON CON ART SHOW HIGHLIGHTS THE WORK OF GENRE ARTISTS

ATLANTA – August 24, 2013 – With a record number of artists submitting entries – more than 250 artists – the Art Show at Dragon Con 2013, Atlanta’s internationally known pop culture, fantasy and sci-fi convention, is the largest and most diverse juried art event in fandom.11x14 thoughts

The show will be judged by a panel of professional artists led by Jim Burns, who is this year’s Dragon Con Guest of Honor. He is being recognized for his lifelong commitment to helping emerging artists who are choosing the sci-fi and fantasy genre as their subject matter. He can often be found giving these young people lectures, demonstrations or reviews of their portfolios to pass on his thirty plus years’ of experience.

Other jurors are Carrie Ann Baade and Omar Rayyan, each recognized in their discipline and connected by a shared love of promoting new artists. While the professional jury determines many of the onsite awards, Dragon Con members are eligible to vote in the Fan Favorite’s portion of the art awards.

Throughout the show, fans have opportunity to meet their favorite artists on show floor or hear them discuss their work in programmed panels and workshops. This year’s panels include discussions and demonstrations of artistic techniques, strengthening creativity and business aspects of being a professional artists.

The Art Show and Print Shop has been a part of Dragon Con for decades and has brought artists such as Larry Elmore (known for his fantasy book-cover paintings), Julie Bell and Boris Vallejo (award-winning fantasy painters), and Laura Reynolds (award-winning multimedia dolls) together with fans of all ages.

Ranging from found-object art, costume pieces, paintings, collage, sketches, hand and digital drawings, figurines, and statues, the Art Show and Print Shop has something for the whole family and every budget. Usually themed in classic science fiction and fantasy topes, in recent years many new artists have found their niche in the increasingly popular Steampunk movement with its appeal of an alternate history where Victorian sensibilities combine with science fiction run amok. 1800 VOLUNTEERS GIVE WINGS TO DRAGON CON

ATLANTA – August 20, 2013 – Dragon Con, Atlanta’s internationally known pop culture, fantasy and sci-fi convention, is a massive convention, but underneath all the excitement are more than 1800 hard working volunteers who make sure there is order behind the insanity. With more than more than 600 guests, performers, and attending professionals – actors, writers, experts and artists – 3500 hours of programming, and an estimated 57,000 attendees projected for 2013, an event of this magnitude doesn’t just happen. It takes dedicated volunteers, from the first-timer learning the ropes to the hardy few who have worked at all 27 conventions. DragonCon 2011 “They make Dragon Con exactly what it is every year; memorable, exciting, and fun,” Convention Chairman Pat Henry said. “In a way, Dragon Con is more than just a convention: It is an event that is run by fans for fans and for that weekend everyone attending can celebrate their fandom with others who share in their passion.” Volunteers are used in every aspect of the convention, from planning and organizing programming tracks to handling IT, security and the Con Suite. They manage the panel rooms, assist members and guests with their needs and even run errands. Their efforts make sure the convention runs safely and smoothly, and, above all, that everybody has a good time. In fact, with less than three weeks before the start of Dragon Con 2013, there is still a need for volunteers in several areas, including security, registration and the Art Show. Volunteering is not without its benefits. It offers a unique Dragon Con experience, giving volunteers a chance to see what makes Dragon Con the memorable and successful experience that it is. It also gives them a chance to give back to the event that means so much to so many people. If you’re interested in becoming a Dragon Con volunteer, click this link to get started: Volunteer. DRAGON CON PARTNERS WITH PASSIONTAG FOR TAGGING AND SHARING PHOTOS

New App Organizes And Filters Pictures for Easy Sharing and Following

ATLANTA – August 10, 2013 – To give members and fans a new interactive way to tag and share photos, Dragon Con, Atlanta’s internationally known pop culture, fantasy and sci-fi convention, has partnered with PassionTag, the first ever, fully interactive, photo sharing platform.

The PassionTag app, available on iTunes, allows users to tag their photos with any of a dozen Dragon Con-related tags, and then post them to their favorite social media platforms such as Twitter or Facebook.  Users can view and “like” all the photos organized under a specific tag regardless of who posted them.  Or, they can follow their friends and other users to view their photo streams.

PassionTag will also be the platform for Dragon Con’s first ever digital Costume Contest.  Dragon Con will provide show attendees a special Costume Contest PassionTag that they can use to capture pictures of fabulous costumes.  The photo garnering the most “likes”, will receive a special prize given out during the show.  In addition, Dragon Con plans to add additional contests around fun activities like collecting and sharing PassionTags.

“There is so much to see and talk about at Dragon Con.  It’s just natural that taking and sharing photos with friends is an important part of the whole experience,” said Rachel Reeves, Senior Director of Guests and Media. “And we know our fans love using cutting-edge smartphone apps.  PassionTag lets our fans do both and experience Dragon Con in a fun new way.”

Users aren’t limited to the Dragon Con-related tags.  They can create their own special tags representing anything for which they have a strong affinity, be it a Brand, Cause, or favorite restaurant.  The options are limitless. PassionTag’s “digital backpack” lets users attach interactive actions that bring photos to life – Websites, Videos, Facebook pages, Twitter channels, and more. Users can easily report photos they find inappropriate and remove them from personal views.

“We are thrilled to have Dragon Con as our premier event partner.  The venue, quality of production, and excitement brought by the tens of thousands who attend is a perfect match for PassionTag.  We look forward to seeing how Dragon Con’s fans share their passion,” said Robert Ross, co-founder and Chief Customer Officer for PassionTag.
